What Kind of Punishment

We all know that in the class we will have a lot of different characteristic of students. Some of them can be really good and smart students. Some other students can be really naughty and hard to control. We cannot avoid this kind of student but we also can't jut let them do whatever they want to do.
What kinds of act that we should do to them?
My brother ever told me this once we cannot punish the students like the old way anymore for example making them run along the school field, make them respect the flag in the middle of the day, slap them in front of class, etc. if we do this to them we will get trouble.
So how will we face them then?
I think by asking them to do the work in front of class will be more effective to make them become more cooperative, they will feel troubled and embarrassed because they did not know what to do.
After they feel embarrassed make sure that they know what they did in class so that make you ask them to do the work. By doing this let's hope that they will obey us in class.
